How Much RAM Does a Minecraft Server Need?

Choose Minecraft VDS resources by edition, server software, world and addon workload as well as player count. No RAM table guarantees the same capacity for every setup. Measure memory requirements and investigate tick delays separately.

Separate editions and modpacks

Java Edition and Bedrock Dedicated Server use different installations. Paper, Fabric and Forge serve different needs; check your mods’ requirements. Verify the required Java version in the selected server software’s current documentation. Mod count alone cannot determine memory requirements.

Do not allocate all VDS memory to Java. Multiple game processes must fit within the total budget. Plan recommendations are starting points rather than measured capacity guarantees.

Set -Xmx using measurements

-Xmx caps the Java heap, not all memory used by the process. Leave OS headroom and observe swapping. High memory usage alone is not proof of insufficient RAM: examine post-GC usage, long pauses and memory errors together. Use startup guidance for your server software.

View distance and world workload

view-distance and simulation-distance affect workload. Distributed players, redstone and entity accumulation change test results. Change one setting and repeat the same scenario so you can identify its effect.

Separate TPS problems from memory problems

Use a supported profiler to identify time-consuming work. Paper’s profiling guide explains spark. Assess per-core CPU load, addons, disk waits and GC pauses together. More RAM alone cannot fix a CPU-heavy addon.

Before upgrading your plan

  1. Record the world, software version and addon list.
  2. Measure CPU, RAM and tick times during a repeatable session.
  3. Back up and test changes in a separate copy.
  4. Reconsider the plan when measurements show a resource limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2 GB of RAM enough for a Minecraft server?

Adequacy depends on the version, OS and world workload. Allow system headroom and test real usage.

Does adding RAM fix lag?

Not always. Assess CPU, storage, addons and GC behavior with a supported profiler.
